In 1928, Sir C. V. Raman while studying the scattering of light by liquids found that when a beam of monochromatic light was passed through organic liquids such as Benzene, toluene etc, then scattered radiation contained other frequencies in addition to that of incident light. The scattering of light from molecules with a change in frequencies is called Raman effect.
