The wave can be defined as the disturbance traveling
in a medium due to the vibratory motion of medium by
virtue of elasticity and inertia.
Types of waves:
Transverse waves:- In these waves, the particles
of medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of
propagation of waves.
Longitudinal waves:- In these waves, the
particles of medium vibrate parallel or anti
parallel to the direction of propagation of waves.
Another classifications:
Progressive or Traveling:- If there is a
continuous transfer of energy in one direction
across any cross-section of the medium, the waves
are called progressive or traveling.
Stationary or Standing:- If the net transfer of
energy across any cross-section of the medium is
zero, the waves are called stationary or standing
waves.
