 Indian Ocean:

  • Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in the world after Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
  • All of the Indian Ocean is entirely located in Eastern hemisphere and the center of the Eastern Hemisphere, 90th meridian east passes through the ninety East Ridge.
  • This ocean covers an area of 70,560,000 km square or 19.8 % of water’s on earth’s surface
  • The maximum length of this ocean is 9,600 km between Antarctica to bay of Bengal
  • The maximum width is 7,600 km between Africa to Australia.
  • The average depth of the ocean is 12,999 feet.
  • The average width of the ocean is between western Australian and eastern coast of Africa which varies between 1,000 km.
  • The Indian Ocean is deeper than Atlantic Ocean.
  • The name of the ocean originates from its location. This is the only ocean which names after a country.
  • The deepest point is in the Java Trench off in southern coast of island Java in Indonesia which is about 24,442 feet deep.
  • Suez Canal in Egypt and Strait of Malacca are two well known waterways are located in the Indian Ocean.
  • Many endangered species such as Turtles, Seals and Dugongs are found in Indian Ocean.
  • This ocean is bounded by Asian in north, Africa in west and Australia in east.
  • North equatorial, north-east monsoon current, Mozambique current, Somali current, Agulhas current, western Australian current, south-west monsoon current, south Indian ocean current are some currents that are located in the Indian Ocean.
  • Some marginal seas and Gulf of the major ocean are Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Andaman Sea, Gulf of Aden and Oman Bay of Bengal and Great Australian Bight Marine Park.
  • Volcanic Island that are located in the Indian Ocean are Barren Island, Narcondam Island, Amsterdam Island Ile aux Cochons, Ile de la possession, Ile de l’Est, Java, Baratang, Grande- Terre, Ile Saint-Paul, Lesser Sunda Islands, Kurli Island.
  • Barren Volcanic Island is the only Active volcano in South Asia which is located in Andaman Sea. 
  • Animals that live in Indian Ocean are Blue whale, Dolphin, Great white shark, Green Sea Turtle, Orca/ killer whale, Hawksbill Sea Turtle, Seahorse etc.
  • Major islands that lies in the Andaman and Nicobar island, Lakshadweep island, Madagascar island, Maldives, Mauritius, Comoros, Seychelles, Sri Lanka etc
  • Madagascar Island in Indian Ocean is the biggest island.
  • Maldives is the smallest island of Indian Ocean.
  • Diego Garcia is an island of the British Indian Ocean Territory is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
  • Indian Ocean Commission is an intergovernmental organisation that links African Indian ocean nations Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles.
  • Indian Ocean Rim Association formerly known as Indian ocean rim initiative and Indian Ocean Rim Association for regional cooperation consisting of 23 states bordering the Indian Ocean. It is established on 6th march 1997 with it’s headquarter in Ebene, Mauritius.
  • Minerals that found in Indian Ocean include Oil, Gas, Tin, Monazite, Zircon, Chromite, Manganese, Copper, Cobalt, Iron hydroxide.
